چکیده

We employ complex continuous wavelet transforms to develop a consistent mathematical framework capable of quantifying both cerebrospinal compensatory reserve and cerebrovascular pressure–reactivity. The wavelet gain ( ) ICP ABP f η , defined as the frequency dependent ratio of time averaged wavelet coefficients of intracranial pressure (ICP) and arterial blood pressure (ABP) fluctuations, characterizes the dampening of spontaneous ABP oscillations. This gain is introduced as a novel measure of cerebrospinal compensatory reserve. For a group of 12 patients who died as a result of cerebral lesions (Glasgow Outcome Scale GOS =1) the average gain calculated at f=0.05 Hz significantly exceeds that of 17 patients with GOS=2: with 0.45 ICP

Cerebral blood flow and autoregulation after pediatric traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury is a global health concern and is the leading cause of traumatic morbidity and mortality in children. Despite a lower overall mortality than in adult traumatic brain injury, the cost to society from the sequelae of pediatric traumatic brain injury is very high. Predictors of poor outcome after traumatic brain injury include altered systemic and cerebral physiology, includ...

Advantages of dexmedetomidine in traumatic brain injury - a review

Patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) require mechanical ventilation for airway protection, to reduce work of breathing, to reduce cerebral metabolic rate and to optimize intracerebral hemodynamics. Drugs like narcotics, benzodiazepines, propofol and alpha-2 agonists with or without non-depolarizing muscle relaxants are used to facilitate mechanical ventilation. We reviewed literature on s...

P143: The Neuroprotective Effect of Chloroquine in Animal Model of Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in young adults and children, and is a leading public health problem worldwide. In TBI, neurological impairment is caused by immediate brain tissue disruption (primary injury) and post‑injury cellular and molecular events (secondary injury) that exacerbate the primary neurological insult. However, the destructi...

Cerebral hemodynamics: concepts of clinical importance.

Cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism are frequently impaired in a wide range of neurological diseases, including traumatic brain injury and stroke, with several pathophysiological mechanisms of injury. The resultant uncoupling of cerebral blood flow and metabolism can trigger secondary brain lesions, particularly in early phases, consequently worsening the patient's outcome. Cerebral blood flow...

Neuroprotective Effects of Berberine After Severe Traumatic Brain Injury in Male Rats: The Role of IL-1β and IL 10

Background and purpose: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death in young people. Berberine is a flavonoid rich in barberries and many traditional Iranian herbal remedies that could be used in treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. These properties make it a viable treatment for neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, this study intended to investigate the neuroprotective ac...

Hyperglycemia and antibody titres against heat shock protein 27 in traumatic brain injury patients on parenteral nutrition

Objective(s):Hyperglycemia worsens the neuronal death induced by cerebral ischemia. Previous studies demonstrated that diabetic hyperglycemia suppressed the expression of heat shock protein 70 and 60 (HSP70 and 60) in the liver. IgG antibody titres against heat shock protein 27 (anti HSP27) were measured to determine whether hyperglycemia exacerbates ischemic brain damage by suppressing the exp...
